AC/DC Road Movie 'Thunderstruck' Wins Overseas Acclaim

April 4, 2004

"Thunderstruck", a new Australian feature comedy which tells the story of five fans who make a pact during AC/DC's Australian tour in 1991 that if one of them dies before they reach 40 the others will bury him beside the grave of AC/DC's late singer, Bon Scott, has been pre-selected for screening at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, according to News.com.au.

Named after an AC/DC song, the AUD $5.6-million film (approximately US $4.3 million) is from a script by Australian Academy of Dramatic Arts graduate Shaun Angus Hall, 28. It is the first feature directed by ad maker Darren Ashton and the independent feature debut for producer Jodi Matterson, 27.

"Thunderstruck" is the first Australian movie picked up by Mel Gibson's Icon company at the script stage and the first in which Sony Australia has invested.

A test screening at Parramatta was packed and hundreds of volunteer extras had to be turned away from the shooting of the finale, which involves 2,000 AC/DC fanatics at a gig played in Fremantle Cemetery where Scott is buried.

"Their fans are unbelievably loyal," Matterson, 27, said. "We put a call out in couple of small newspaper ads for fans ... and we were inundated." [Read more here]
